IT is a great honour to welcome everyone to the Kouga region of the Eastern Cape, South Africa, for the sixth edition of the JBay Winterfest.

The Winterfest has in a few short years become the biggest multi-sports event on South Africa’s winter ca-lendar.

The 2018 event promises to be even ‘bigger and better’ than previous years, with the world’s top women surfers also set to participate in the Corona Open JBay.

It is the first time since 2000 that the World Surf League (WSL) Women’s and Men’s Championship Tours will takeplace concurrently. I would like to thank the WSL for bestowing this incredible honour on Kouga, as well as allowing the contest to serve as the anchor event of the Winterfest.

The Winterfest was initiated in 2013 by our local sports community and they remain one of the driving forces behind its success. I join my predecessor, the late Executive Mayor Elza van Lingen, in thanking them for their passion and contribution towards keeping Kouga’s economy alive during the quiet winter months.

I like to reaffirm our commitment, as the Kouga Council, to support the Winterfest as part of our local economic growth strategy.

We wish all the participants the best and hope that this year’s event will be an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.

We’ve already had five fantastic Winterfest years. May year number six be the best to date, and the start of even greater things to follow.
