KOUGA Municipality is set to roll out a new strategy to combat illegal dumping and keep Kouga’s townships clean.

“We want to start phasing out skip bins and replace them with a wheelie bin for each household,” Executive Mayor Horatio Hendricks said in his State of the Municipality Address.

“We will be kickstarting this process over the next four months with the acquisition and distribution of 3 700 wheelie bins to households in disadvantaged areas.”

He said skip bins had proven to be as much of a problem as they are a solution, as the areas around them tend to be turned into dumping sites.

“Our cleansing teams have been going all out to keep these areas clean, but it is a losing battle, with the same site simply having to be cleaned over and over again.”

He said despite the challenges, the cleanliness of Kouga towns in general, including public ablution facilities, had improved tremendously.

“This is reflected by the scores of compliments and praise received, especially on social media platforms.

“I would like to thank our cleansing teams, supported by the Community Works Programme (CWP) workers, for the dedication they have shown in this regard, especially over the recent festive season when they were called on to work at all hours of the day and night.”
