Wind farm gives emerging farmers ‘windful’ boost

SOME 35 local cattle farmers can now look forward to improving the quality of their livestock, as well as increasing their profit margin.

The Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm, situated between Jeffreys Bay and Humansdorp in Kouga, funded R1.65 million in support of the Kruisfontein Emerging Cattle Farmers Herd Improvement Programme that was formed by black emerging farmers ten years ago.

The funds will be used to alter the baseline value of their herd over the next five generations through the implementation of the current breeding programme, as well as by developing the skills of the farmers.

“’This group of male and female farmers, who lease land in Kruisfontein just outside Humansdorp, were in need of a hand-ling facility for their cattle, as well as stud bulls and cows, in order to become a successful commercial beef farming enterprise capable of competing with the best commercial farmers in the Eastern Cape,” says Marion Green-Thompson, Economic Development Director for Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm.

“The cattle-handling facilities and loading ramp, which are used for veterinary inspections and routine dosing and dipping, form part of the long-term investment and success of the business venture.”
