1 408kg of litter removed in clean up

2018-10-17 06:05

A TOTAL of 1 408kg of litter was removed from the Caluza area and the Duzi River in a clean up campaign by the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA). On Monday, the DEA cleaned the area to mark National Marine Week.

The litter collected consisted of domestic waste like glass bottles, nappies, plastic bottles and cardboard boxes.

National Marine Week is generally observed in the second week of October.

Other programmes for this week include outreach campaigns aimed at raising awareness for conservation of the ocean and coastal ecosystems, through encouraging good behaviour. The awareness campaigns are aimed at educating the general public, particularly the youth. The DEA will also look to sell marine-related career fields to youth. — The Witness
