11 years for robbery

THREE men accused of robbery were sentenced to 11 years’ imprisonment last Friday at the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court.

This comes after the trio had robbed a student who was walking on Riverton Road in Scottsville in January one afternoon.

The three men held the student at knife point and two of them fled with a cellphone and cash.

After the student screamed for assistance while being held up, community members rushed to the scene and apprehended one of the men while the other two fled.

The Alexandra Police Station dog unit then responded to calls for help and found the remaining two men in a nearby bush.

The men were then subsequently arrested and police recovered the stolen cellphone and cash. A knife was also recovered from the men which was tied to the incident.

The men were charged for robbery with a weapon and appeared in court where they were each found guilty and sentenced to 11 years’ imprisonment.

“This sentence is mostly welcomed by the station commander due to the increase in robberies in Scottsville.

This also proves the importance of working together with communities in the fight against crime,” said spokesperson for the Alexandra Police Station, Captain Kholeka Mhlongo.
