2017-11-29 06:02

THE Pietermaritzburg Regional court sentenced Siyabonga Siya Ngcobo (30), to 15 years’ imprisonment for a 2015 rape in Taylors Halt.

The second suspect is still at large after absconding his bail conditions.

The Plessisslaer Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit is looking for him and a warrant for his arrest has been issued.

“We are appealing to anyone who might have information about the whereabouts of Bhekithemba Zondi (30), to come forward and report to the nearest police station,” KZN SAPS spokesperson, Captain Nqobile Gwala said.

Gwala said on December 15, 2015 the victim (35), was having drinks at Taylors Halt with the two suspects.

“While in the house, it is alleged the suspects switched off the lights and allegedly raped the victim. A case of rape was opened at Taylors Halt Police Station for further investigation. Both suspects were arrested,” Gwala said.

Plessisslaer Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences took over the investigation and the suspects were charged accordingly.

They appeared in court where both were released on bail.

“The second suspect failed to return to court and a warrant for his arrest has been issued.”

The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa commended the work of Plessisslaer Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit for collecting sufficient evidence that led to the conviction of the accused.

“We will not rest until the second suspect is apprehended, who will face the full might of the law. I always encourage women and children not remain silent and report to the police any abuse directed at them,” Gwala said. - Supplied.
