A MAN who killed a police clerk last year to steal his car was on Tuesday sentenced to an effective 18 years’ imprisonment.Andile Mabizela (26) was convicted by the Pietermaritzburg High Court of robbery and the murder of Sandile Malinga, who was stabbed more than 10 times. The state proved that on June 2, Mabizela and two other men, Stanton Palm and Mike Sabela, were travelling in Malinga’s car when they decided to steal it. Palm’s trial has been separated from Mabizela’s case, while Sabela became a state witness. The trio stole Malinga’s Nike takkies after stabbing him. They then drove the body to a sugar cane plantation in Wartburg where they set it alight.Mabizela and Palm then tried to sell the car to multiple customers, but could not get a buyer for it. The men parted ways and Mabizela drove the vehicle to his house in Panorama Gardens. He lied to his family that Malinga disappeared at the Royal Showgrounds with some friends and would return to collect the vehicle.Malinga’s body was found by workers at the plantation. Mabizela and Palm were subsequently arrested and both made confessions.
