A TOTAL of 31 aspiring models from all over KwaZulu- Natal on Saturday gathered at the Pietermaritzburg city hall with the hope of winning the 2016 Face of KZN crown.

The contest, in its fourth year, saw 26-year-old Carla van Rensburg from Amanzimtoti and 23-year-old Romeo Zondo from Durban emerge as the winners. Van Rensburg and Zondo each walked away with prizes to the value of R59 100.

Guests includes Mrs South Africa finalist, Maritsa Gouws, Mr South Africa finalist, Sibonelo Zungu and Face of KZN 2013 winner, Zandile Thusi.

The theme for this year’s competition was “celebrating youth cultural diversity”.

Event organiser Bengs Nkosi said the winners will also receive skills training on careers they wish to pursue in future.

“They are the new youth ambassadors and will be doing voluntary work with an NGO of their choice that promotes youth development in KwaZulu-Natal.

“The duration of voluntary work is 12 months. They will be giving motivational talks at schools and youth centres creating awareness on albinism, bullying, gangsterism, drug abuse, teenage pregnancy, racism, violence, sexually transmitted diseases, HIV/Aids, abstinence, blessers and road accidents,” said Nkosi.

Nkosi said he was happy with how the panel of judges handled judging.

“It was a successful event, our celebrity judges facilitated the judging process fairly with the assistance of the public, who voted for their favourite contestant. The entire event was professionally handled.”

The contest will also be aired on television soon.

Prizes were sponsored by Bengs Nkosi, Virgin Active, Nathi B Potrait Studio, Cine Centre, Greater Edendale Mall, 39 Degrees Photography, 033Lifestyle, Mo’Bella Beauty Salon and Irene’s Models Agency.

Local designer Bryno Von Johncen dressed four female contestants and 2013 winner Zandile Thusi. Sbu Professional Salon hairdressers did Thusi’s hair.
