500 extra entries made available for Maritzburg City Marathon

ENTRIES for the 42,2km Witness Medihelp Maritzburg City Marathon next month surpassed the safety cap of 3 000 over the weekend.

However, following the Comrades Marathon Association board’s decision to allow “Mat to Mat” qualifying times, the organisers have decided to make an additional 500 marathon entries available.

There are still almost 2 000 half marathon (21,1km) and about 1 500 10km slots available, but these are being filled steadily.

“Following the initial decision, by the race director of Comrades, to disallow net time for qualification, we took the safety precaution to double the width of the marathon and half marathon start. We were extremely concerned about the potential of crushing at the start” said Maritzburg City Marathon race director John Hall.

“When the board acceded to our request to review this decision, we decided to leave the new start as is. This has afforded us the option to increase the marathon cap from 3 000 to 3 500. Having said this, we encourage people to get their entries in sooner rather than later, to avoid disappointment.”

Once the entries shut down on February 1 or when the new limits have been achieved, the 300 “charity entries” for each of the 21,1 and 42,2 km events will be made available, at premium prices of R400 and R500 respectively. The proceeds of these late entries will be divided between the three official charities — Pietermaritzburg Community Chest and cancer charities PinkDrive and MBTM.

Entries for the marathon, half marathon, 10 km and both trail runs on offer this year can be made online at www.pmb42.co.za, where you’ll find all the information about the races.

Locally, paper entries can be dropped off, in sealed envelopes with the entry fee, at Poobie Naidoo Sports Warehouse in Boshoff Street.

“We will also be taking entries for all the events at the Ronnie Darvel race in Hilton this coming Sunday morning” added Hall. — Sports Reporter.
