NONTUTHUKO Mashimane completed her first Comrades Marathon, earning herself a bronze medal and donated R10 000 to the Pietermaritzburg and District Community Chest.

Mashimane managed to double her goal which was set at R5 000, she was also profiled on East Coast Radio as an inspirational runner.

Following the initial article about Mashimane running the Comrades for charity which appeared in the Maritzburg Fever on 6 May 2015, she received a sponsorship from Garden City Motors who provided her with transport to and from the Comrades Expo on two days and took Mashimane and her mother to the start of the race. Also from the article, Mashimane received a free massage before and after the race from Senses Day Spa.

After falling at Camperdown, stopping for selfies with the crowd, Mashimane finished the race in 10 hours and 12 minutes.

“After falling I really had to mentally work myself up and continue. I just remember thinking that there are so many people routing for me and waiting for me at the finish and I could not let those people down. So I had to dig deep, think happy thoughts and continue.Finishing the Comrades has been a life-changing experience. When I got to the start line at Durban City Hall, I remember thinking - ‘wow I’m going to go to Maritzburg with my two feet’.”

She said that the people along the route carried her through.

“Sport really does bring people together.”

She admires everyone who participated in the Comrades.

“It doesn’t matter who you are, where you are from, anyone can take on the challenge,” she said.

Mashimane will continue to work with the Community Chest as an ambassador. “It doesn’t end with Comrades, this is an ongoing relationship. People will always need help.”
