Anti-fraud and corruption hotline, a success

2015-09-09 06:00

PIETERMARITZBURG’S whistle-blower hotline was positively received by the Msunduzi Municipality Executive Committee members when the report was presented at a recent meeting.

Municipal manager, Mxolisi Nkosi, said that they were satisfied with the progress made by the hotline and thanked the public and municipal employees, who had made use of the hotline to assist in rooting out fraud, corruption and other crimes within the municipality.

He encouraged city deputy managers to emphasise the importance of reporting crime and using the anti-fraud hotline.

“The whistle-blowing hotline continues to operate effectively and matters are being reported separately to the strategic management committee on a quarterly basis,” said Nkosi.

The report recommended that deputy municipal managers “take firm action against fraud, corruption, theft, gross irregularities and gross misconduct in their area of operation.”

Focus has been on informing residents how they can access the whistle-blower hotline, and posters are up in the city with information about the hotline.

“The results of the hotline indicate that employees and members of the public are willing to work with the municipality,” read the report.

Nkosi’s other recommendation was that the anti-fraud and corruption hotline be placed on the agenda of mayoral public participation meetings to thank communities for reporting incidents of alleged fraud and corruption in the municipality and to continuously encourage citizens to assist in fighting these issues
