MARITZBURG United coach Clive Barker has cooled rumours linking them with a move for talented former Bafana Bafana captain Mbulelo Mabizela.

The Team of Choice, who are still looking for their first League win of the campaign, are in desperate need of an experienced defender having leaked 16 goals at the back in seven Absa Premiership games.

Mabizela has been in the football wilderness since leaving AmaZulu following their relegation from the PSL last season, but Barker says they are not yet looking in his direction.

“I love OJ, I think he’s the right player to get in any setup,” Barker says.

“He’s a tough character and has a nice personality, but he has [his] ways and as a coach you have to sort those things out.

“You have to keep him going as far as you can, but I think his record shows he’s a tough character to handle, but there’s no truth yet that we’re looking at OJ.”

Mabizela fell out of favour with Barker while at Mpumalanga Black Aces over reported ill-discipline last year and it remains to be seen whether “The Dog” will hand him another lifeline. - Supplied.
