Canine goes on his first beat

2015-06-10 06:00

FISCHER, the proud donation of members of the public, went on his first beat with the K9 unit in Pietermaritzburg this month.

At the beginning of the year, Rowan White spearheaded a fund to replace police dogs lost in the line of duty and of natural causes. He said that this community initiative, not specific to Clarendon, was motivated by the shooting and killing of police dog Sky in the line of duty in the Town Bush area on 7 November, 2014.

White started the initiative and then two women from the community came on board.

“The best part and probably the most heart-warming thing to come from this initiative was the donation we received from a pensioner in PMB who donated R2 000 of her pension towards or initiative.”

He said that he was proud of the efforts of the public and emphasised that this initiative was only to make people aware of the incredible work that the K9 Unit does.

“Our goal is to bridge the gap between the community and the police and to encourage others to help those who are looking after our safety the best way they can.”

Fischer is a thoroughbred German Shepherd and works in various areas of Pietermaritzburg within the Midlands boundaries.

Fischer’s handler and partner is Sergeant Shaun Wood.

White appealed to organisations that are involved in contributing to the K9 Unit to join forces with his initiative, Friends of the K9 Unit.

“It’s about everyone joining forces to help in any way they can. There is a constant need for dogs as they are often killed in the line of duty and the K9 unit relies heavily on public donations.”
