FED up with the atrocious state and lack of respect at the Commercial Road cemetery, Amanda Peddle and a team of 20 people will be cleaning it up on Saturday, 17 October.

An invitation to those who want to help clean it up was made by Peddle, who works near the historical graveyard.

“We realised what a shocking state it was in after we recently visited it to look for the graves of people who owned the building I work in. I was appalled at the lack of respect people have for the dead and even more so, the activities that are taking place there,” she said.

Following the visit she decided to do something about the state of the cemetery and today date 20 people have offered to help - whether to man the water table, supply equipment or insecticide or assist with their physical help.

Peddle said there are some schools that want to be involved as part of their community service, and Traffords Restaurant said it would also help.

There is no specific time for people to arrive said Peddle, however, she will be on site from 8am and aims for the clean-up to be completed by 1pm so that people still have time left to enjoy the weekend.

“Anyone can come, at any time to help out. You can stay for as long or short as you like, the more the merrier. Any small contribution helps.”

Peddle asks the community to get involved to help maintain and preserve the history of Pietermaritzburg. To get involved or contribute in any way email Peddle at peddle her@gmail.com
