Communication blues

2015-05-20 06:00

SOME weeks ago – on not one, but a few occasions, the Minister of Higher Education was on TV moaning that there were many colleges and institutions that were not registered or accredited, and were producing “false” and “fake” certificates to which those people who had them were handing them out only later to find they had no creditability.

As the Great Commission Bible College at the time was in the process of getting registered as a NPO with the Department of Trade and Industry, I wanted to do the right thing.

As the registration as a NPO was complete we took the next step - register with the bank formally as a business account, which was step two.

I then downloaded the forms from the Department of Higher Education to start the process of registering as a learning institute to which, due to ill health, there has been a delay, but it is almost finished and we will submit our application with the proper registration fee.

I then contacted SAQA for the registration forms to start the process of getting accredited in South Africa.

The Great Commission College is accredited in the U.S.

When I read the forms from SAQA I was shocked to see that the cost to get our little Bible college accredited in South Africa was R10 000 per level, and we have five levels, diploma, ADM, degree, master and doctorate, which would cost us R50 000.

I was so shocked, and remembering what the minister said, I wrote to him asking him why and asked if he can investigate the matter.

Well here is my problem, I have written to him about six times and have yet to get a reply.

Please do your own investigation and you will come up with the same conclusion as me – all these colleges won’t get accreditation. Do they have that type of money to do get accreditation.

I am also writing to you to bring this to the attention of the public - when you have a problem and you try to communicate with the government it just doesn’t answer you.
