Funding caution

MSUNDUZI councillors expressed concern at a recent executive meeting regarding the influx of sponsorship requests coming through to the municipality, some of which were for events that have already taken place.

This after a sitting of Exco saw four items on the agenda which were funding requests.

DA councillor and Exco member, Bill Lambert, cautioned that it should be mindful of the numerous requests received, particularly those that are ex-post facto and remember that it was not long ago when council was handing out funds for events before landing itself in great debt.

Councillor Jabu Ngubu agreed with Lambert saying that Exco needs to ensure they have has done research into all events to make sure they were distributing funds for the right reasons.

Over R840 000 in funds was requested from the municipality for events which included the recent Indondo Awards, Asifunde Mobile Library Literacy Campaign Launch, Woman to Woman Ezikabhoqo event and Isimilo Samafunze traditional ceremony. Councillor Judith Lawrence said that it was “unbelievable” that people could host an event without ensuring they have the funding to do so. She said that funds should be used for the benefit of the people of the city by way of buying books for the literacy programme instead of paying for décor at the event.

Mayor Chris Ndlela requested that funding requests be checked again, and where possible, decrease the amount requested
