Gearing up for second annual Soca address

2015-07-29 06:00

MSUNDUZI Municipal Mayor Chris Ndlela is gearing up for the second annual State of the City Address (Soca) on Friday, 31 July at the Royal Showgrounds.

Msunduzi Municipality is only the second municipality in history to have such an address.

During the launch of the address last week, Ndlela said he will present his vision for the city to the people of the Pietermaritzburg and give a “factual account” of the progress the municipality has made over the past five years.

“We want to create a safe, vibrant city that is tailor-made to address all the needs of the residents.

“We are capable and a developed municipality with all senior management skilled and able to lead the way and drive goals,” he said.

Municipal manager, Mxolisi Nkosi, said that it is time to claim the position as the capital city of the province and bring back the dignity of the city.

“People are beginning to take us seriously, and it’s about time, we are the second biggest city in the province.”

The event was shared with the launch of the 2015 City Development Strategy which details the goals the municipality has for the next 15 years, until 2030.

“This is our promise to the younger generation - this is what you will be living under and what we are working towards,” said Nkosi.

Ndlela said the strategy defines the path that needs to be taken in order to achieve their goals.

“It’s time to go back to basics. We need to ensure that we as a municipality are functional and efficient. We have reached a pint of financial sustainability. We have a solid and healthy investment of over R1 billion in reserves,” he said.

He said it is time to enforce by-laws more strongly and take a tougher stance on illegal connections and non-payment from residents.

“We will not compromise the integrity of this constitution.”

Ndlela said the people of the city and people who live out of the city are fast shedding the small-town mentality and beginning to take Pietermaritzburg seriously.

“We are building a better city for our future and the State of the City Address will give a practical reflection on the strides Msunduzi has taken from its core mandate.

“There are many pockets of excellence in the city, we have the potential to be the best municipality,” said Ndlela
