WILDLANDS Conservation Trust is appealing to Pietermaritzburg schools to get involved in its latest Clothes for Life project and collect clothes which can be bartered allowing those in underprivileged communities to earn a living.

“There are many women in our communities who do not work because they cannot find a job or they cannot leave their home because of many socio-economic reasons. There is also a very real need for good-quality clothing in our underprivileged communities,” said Bronwen Bainbridge, Wildlands Partnerships manager.

Wildlands has an existing base of about 10 000 “green-preneurs” who generate support for themselves through the barter of trees and waste for building materials, small business grants, bicycles and educational support.

“Bartering clothing allows these green-preneurs to generate cash from the bundles of clothing they are bartering trees and waste for. They can also clothe themselves and their families by growing trees for Wildlands and collecting waste in their communities.”

A portion of the clothing Wildlands receives is donated to disadvantaged schools and non-profit organisations to give to patients seeking help from clinics or people living in homes and shelters. Any school or organisation can get involved and collect clothing by organising a collection campaign with Wildlands. The public can also drop off bags of clothes at the Hilton office at the Quarry Centre. Schools can use this campaign to fundraise for their outreach projects. Makro has come on board to sponsor gift vouchers for those who participate and has sponsored clothing.

“There is no end date for this initiative. Organisations need to choose how long they would like to run their campaign before Wildlands picks up the bags,” said Bainbridge.

Makro is sponsoring vouchers in return for donations and there are also prizes to be won.

“These are rewards you will receive for helping local communities and contributing to environmental sustainability,” she added.
