NIKHIL Gopal, a St Charles College Grade 8 pupil, has been a golf admirer from a young age, which was strongly influenced by his dad.

Nikhil started his career by winning his first golf trophy at the age of seven. His amateur career started under trainer Luke Kelly, which saw Nikhil represent KwaZulu-Natal at the age of 12. He finished 16th in South Africa at the Fish River Sun competition.

In 2014, Nikhil won multiple KZN tournaments including the KZN Junior Stroke play (B Division) which lead to him being selected for the KZN U15 team. That year he became the youngest golfer to win the club championships (B Division) at Victoria Country Club.

Nikhil’s game continued to improve and he soon became a single-figure handicap. In 2015, he represented KZN in Rustenburg and finished 17th in South Africa and is ranked 10th in South Africa for the U15 age group. In February he participated in the international qualifiers, winning by 14 strokes.

Nikhil has qualified and will play at the AAU Junior Olympics of Golf in the U.S. for three weeks in Los Angeles and San Diego.

Some of Nikhil’s achievements:

Qualified to play the Veritas World Junior Golf Invitational.

Won the SA Junior Open at Mount Edgcombe twice.

Finished second at the VCC Club Championships in the A Division.

Won the Jackson Cup (2013 and 2014).

Won the annual St Charles College Golf Tour Championships.
