Hotel group develops Hayfields ‘eyesore’

2015-04-30 14:32

THE multimillion-rand budget hotel development in the Hayfields area is back on track.

City Lodge Hotel Group has taken over the development of the hotel, to be located at the corner of New England Road and Hesketh Drive. The development was initially proposed as an apartment complex and a Formula One Hotel by developers, Dezzo Holdings.

Construction has since ground to a halt and Hayfields residents have complained that the site had turned into a neglected, overgrown eyesore.

City Lodge Group told executive committee members in the Msunduzi Council that construction has resumed.

The transfer took place in October and developers went out to tender and construction began.

The hotel is scheduled to open in November and will employ 15 people, joining the City Lodge chain of hotels in South Africa, Nairobi, Kenya and Botswana.

“Construction commenced in March, and is now well under way on the hotel site with contractors established on site and the platforms being levelled.

“Site offices have been established and there is activity visible daily,” said a council report.

“Progress is now visible to anyone approaching from the New England Road side and appears to be moving fast,” it continued.

Exco member councillor Eunice Majola said development would ease the pressure for accommodation as Pietermaritzburg has a critical shortage of hotels.

Angus McMillan, communications manager from City Lodge Group, said they will invest around R45 million in land, building, furniture and fittings.

He said the hotel will be their 22nd Road Lodge in the country and the 56th hotel in the City Lodge Hotel Group.

He said Road Lodge is the budget one-star brand within the four brand City Lodge Hotel Group, the other three brands being the four-star Courtyard Hotel, the three-star City Lodge Hotel and the two-star Town Lodge brands.

“This will be a 90-room Road Lodge. It can accommodate up to three people per room paying a single room rate. It will accommodate a variety of people - from business people to leisure visitors,” he said.
