KZN Mountain Bike Championships this month

2015-05-27 06:00

THE Cascades Mountain Bike Park will host the 2015 KwaZulu-Natal MTB Championships on 30 May.

Sponsored by KwaZulu-Natal Sports and Recreation, which has provided fantastic support of cycling events in the province, the annual championship event will crown the provincial cross-country champion across all the age categories. Cross-country racing is the only mountain biking Olympic discipline.

Trail builder extraordinaire, Nick Floros, the man responsible for designing and building the World Cup and World Championship tracks, is using his creative flow to ensure that the provincial championship track offers some fresh changes.

“Being a championship event, it needs to be a hard route for the riders yet also appeal to spectators. There are so many trails over here that it is like a rabbit warren, so the objective is to connect them in a unique way that makes for interesting racing while being spectator friendly,” said Floros.

Floros will be incorporating a lot of the “old stuff” but linked in a new and refreshing manner, keeping most of the racing action near the bottom end of the park so that it can be viewed from the start and finish area.

Online pre-entries are now open and close on Wednesday, 27 May. Late entries will be accepted at registration with a nominal charge of R50 in addition to the entry fee.

Entrance for spectators is free, and all are welcome to watch spectacular mountain-bike racing.
