Leaders need to reflect on protests

2015-10-15 06:00

WHY are citizens always protesting in the streets? Politicians should not tell me it’s democracy in action. Yes, to a certain point it is, but leaders need to do some self-reflection.

This is not a tongue-in cheek question and by no means am I trying to degrade the efforts of thousands walking on the streets with billboards. I have also walked the streets for various causes and have the utmost admiration for those who walk the talk by participating in non-violent protests to raise awareness for a cause, such as the recent anti-corruption march.

Leaders should take heed of these protests, which are in retaliation for the lack of service delivery and the expectations of the masses. There is a strong link between corruption and the ongoing service-delivery protests.

We need more people to talk truth to power in order to bring about a life of dignity for all and to hold our leaders accountable.

While the ANC-led government needs to be commended for making some progress towards a better life for all, there is a lot more that needs to be done in service delivery and other areas such as empowerment, poverty and unemployment.

There has to be a political will to end corruption and improve important services such as health, education, security and job creation. Let’s work together to improve the lives of all.
