PIETERMARITZBURG marathon enthusiasts, Stephen and Eleanor Pienaar, flew halfway across the world to compete in their sixth continent marathon in Rio de Janeiro, South America.

The marathon is divided into 42km, 21km and fun runs and is a picturesque, coastal course that is almost completely flat with runners from all around the world participating.

The Pienaars said that they were well received in their South African vests and met some foreign runners proudly showing off their Comrades Marathon badges.

The route winds through city streets and runners are cheered on by supporters lining the streets.

“We were met with big cheers and shouts of “Go Bafana Bafana” as the crowds recognised our South African vests,” said Eleanor.

The couple were elated and relieved to cross the finish line and receive their medal, knowing that continent six was complete.

Having completed races in North America, the New York Marathon, Europe, the London Marathon, Africa, the Postnet Maritzburg Marathon, Asia, the Great Wall of China Marathon, Oceania, the Sydney Marathon and now South America, Rio Marathon, the Pienaars only have the Antarctic left to accomplish their dream of seven on seven.

“We have made plans to run our last and seventh continent race in November 2016.

“The journey has been such an extraordinary blessing, filled with wonderful memories and we have met amazing new friends. For our final race we would like to give back and will be running the Antarctic Ice marathon in aid of charity,” said Eleanor. - Supplied
