FROM a private health-care investment perspective, Pietermaritzburg is fertile ground. Because we are a capital city, there are a large number of government employees living and working in the city who are on medical aid, and therefore tend to utilise private health-care facilities.

In addition, we have a large retirement community, many of whom require specialist services. These two factors alone contribute to an above-average demand for private health care.

Couple them with the quality of life offered by Pietermaritzburg and surrounds, and the availability of exceptional schools, and one can easily see why medical professionals would find our city an attractive place to establish their practices.

Development happens naturally where conditions are favourable, and I suspect that it was for these very reasons that Netcare chose to invest in St Anne’s 25 years ago. It simply made sense to invest in a private hospital in Pietermaritzburg.

On behalf of the Pietermaritzburg business community, I salute Netcare for having identified the opportunities, wisely invested their resources and expertise and for growing St Anne’s into the remarkable and professional institution it is today.

I admire their foresight, entrepreneurial spirit and courage, and on behalf of Pietermaritzburg, I’d like to say we are grateful for their investment.

Netcare’s commitment to Pietermaritzburg certainly didn’t stop there. The continued confidence in our city has seen the hospital grow into a contemporary 200+bed facility with eight operating theatres and 460 staff permanently employed. Impressively, six of those staff members have been employed for the full 25 years.

Despite being part of a large group, Netcare St Anne’s commitment to the Pietermaritzburg community has never waned.

Their management team are active members of our chamber, and when we have asked for assistance with community projects, they have always been one of the first to respond.

The Chatterton traffic circle revamp under the P3 campaign is one such example in which they did not only come to the party, but went the extra mile.

As is the recent assistance with equipment for an emergent clinic.

Thank you Netcare St Anne’s for choosing to invest in Pietermaritzburg, for caring and continuing to invest in our community and for all the ways in which we will work together in the future to make our capital city a more liveable city, and the City of Choice for health care
