Msunduzi Municipality suspends 19 employees

2015-04-30 14:34

THE Msunduzi Municipality has suspended 19 employees.

This came to light at a recent Msunduzi full council meeting.

The suspensions were part of the municipal manager, Mxolisi Nkosi’s report.

Presenting the report, Nkosi said that at the time when the report was compiled in February, only 17 employees had been suspended.

“As of today, the number of municipal employees who are on suspension is sitting at 19. Which means between today and the time of writing the report, two more officials have been suspended,” said Nkosi.

He said that it is untrue that 50 employees have been suspended.

“The issues of suspension are between the employer and employee and we do not discuss them with the media,” said Nkosi.

“How long have the suspensions been in place? What are we doing to address the suspensions? Are they under disciplinary?” asked DA councillor Naleni Atwaru.

Nkosi said the period of suspensions given to the 19 municipal employees vary.

“They vary in terms of the time that people have been suspended. We have got a 90-day period on which we have to suspend and bring people back or charge them,” said Nkosi.

He said that only one case has taken longer than 90 days, adding that all the others are within the framework of the law.

The Witness quoted a South African Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) official as saying that the list of suspended officials consists of both high and low-level municipal staff.

“Some of them were suspended six months ago, some were suspended three months ago, but they are sitting at home getting paid to do nothing.

“I don’t believe all incidents warranted suspensions - some of them should have been investigated first. Besides the suspensions, corruption is rife in Msunduzi,”
