Netball tourney attracts competitive players

ACTION Sports Pietermaritzburg in Mkondeni recently hosted the national netball tournament which saw netball players from all provinces battling it out towards victory.

The tournament started last Monday and ended on Sunday.

Most gold medals were won by Western Province and most silver and bronze medals were won by the KwaZulu-Natal teams.

The KZN Midlands won silver­ in the U18 age group.

There were seven age-group categories playing from 6 April until 12 April.

The teams which participated were the KZN Midlands, KZN Coastal, Gauteng North, Gauteng South, Gauteng East, Gauteng West, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Boland, Western Province and Eastern Province.

The event organiser Andrew­ Sardinha said there were 61 teams from the U13 up to the U18, and U18 mixed categories.

“They had been playing from Monday to Sunday and these teams come from all over the country.

“It is the first time that Pietermaritzburg­ is hosting the junior netball tournament. It normally rotates around the country. It was also the first time that KZN Midlands teams entered,” said Sardinha.

He said KZN Midlands has five teams in the U13, U14, U15, U16 and U17 categories.

By last Friday, the U13 Eastern Gauteng coach Connie­ Jenkinson said the competition was getting tougher towards the finals.

“The games have been very tight and it was not easy.

“The competition has been good.”
