New training pitch for United and Eagles

MSUNDUZI council is yet to reveal the name of the new training pitch which will be used alternatively between Maritzburg United and Royal Eagles Football Club. This is to ease stress at the Harry Gwala Stadium.

Some months ago Royal Eagles Club approached the municipality saying they were eager to train at the Harry Gwala Stadium and intend to be based full time in Pietermaritzburg.

Municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi told the Executive committee that in instances where there is a clash of fixtures between Maritzburg United and Royal Eagles first preference should be given to Maritzburg United.

“[This is] Obviously because they are a Premier Soccer League (PSL) team and Royal Eagles is a National First Division (NFD) club. Royal Eagles will use the alternative venue. However, in instances where there is a clash between Maritzburg United and Royal Eagles, and that clash is as a result of Maritzburg United requiring the Harry Gwala Stadium for practice, first preference will be given to Royal Eagles for their matches. In that case we will have to find an alternative venue for training for Maritzburg United,” said Nkosi.

Councillor Judith Lawrence asked where council would outsource the money from for pitch maintenance with two teams using Harry Gwala Stadium as a training ground.

Community services municipal manager Boniwe Zulu said council will provide an alternative training pitch instead of Harry Gwala Stadium.

“The traffic on the pitch is compounded by the fact that Maritzburg United is using it as a training facility. There is a training pitch which we are currently working on. We then need to fast-track the training pitch so that it can release pressure on the main pitch,” said Zulu.
