Obituary Melvyn Eric ‘Sos’ Fryer

2015-10-07 06:00

MELVYN Eric ‘Sos’ Fryer died due to multiple organ failure at the age of 73.

Fryer served on various Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) race organising committee portfolios, including the start venue, finish venue and at the Pietermaritzburg registration. He worked as a mechanic at the Pietermaritzburg Fire Department until he was medically boarded in 1999. Despite his health, he never stopped fulfilling his responsibilities at the Comrades Marathon year in and year out, up until the 90th Comrades this year.

Fondly known as “Sos”, former CMA chairperson and board member, Peter Proctor said he was a long-standing member of the finish venue portfolio and was a regular member of the time-keeping team for many races in and around KwaZulu-Natal.

“Sos was also a member of the route marking team where he will be remembered for his preparation of the breakfast egg and bacon rolls, and the steak and sausages for lunch for a team of hard-working and hungry volunteers. He will be remembered for his dedication and commitment to Comrades,” he said.

Fryer is survived by his wife Jo, eight children, 14 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter
