THREE Pietermaritzburg pupils, who will be representing Pietermaritzburg and South Africa during the upcoming U19 Schools Squash Tour to Malaysia, are appealing for donations for the trip.

Each player - Noel Lee, Anele Ngubane and Ana Chemaly - will need R28 000. Noel and Anele are at Epworth School and Ana is at St Anne’s Diocesan College.

Noel and Ana are in Grade 11, Anele is in Grade 12.

They are expected to leave for Malaysia on 27 May and return on 10 June.

“We will be playing a series of Test matches against teams from Hong Kong, Malaysia and Australia as well as competing in the Penang International Junior Championships from 1 to 6 June. We will also have coaching at an international coaching centre in Malaysia,” said Noel.

She said she loves squash because it is an individual sport.

“The result of a match depends on me alone and how I play. Squash demands high levels of physical and mental fitness and self-discipline. Training with the Epworth squad and our coaches is great fun and the Maritzburg squash community is very supportive. I have grown a lot as a person through squash.”

Noel and Anele started playing squash in Grade 6.

“I started squash towards end of Grade 6 at The Grange Primary.

“If I’m aiming to do well I will not need to depend on other people in the team. Squash has helped me grow as a person and has helped me to understand that self-motivation and belief are the most important things,” said Anele.

Ana said she loves squash because of the positive environment around it.

The girls are appealing to businesses, companies or individuals to assist with financial sponsorship to enable them to go on tour.
