Public Protector’s PMB offices lease ends PMB office ‘vital’ for Madosela

2015-08-26 06:00

FOLLOWING the recommendation not to renew the lease at the Public Protector’s office in Mkondeni Market block, opposition parties insisted that alternate office space be sought for Thuli Madonsela.

DA executive committee member, Bill Lambert said it was of utmost importance to ensure that the city continue to have an office for Madosela as this is the capital of the province and the city should do what it can to host her. “Surely, if we cannot accommodate the Public Protector at the market then we should find her an alternative and suitable office space within the municipality,’ said Lambert.

Although the strategic management committee recommended that the lease be renewed, this was not supported by the economic development committee. The report stated that the lease for the public protector not be renewed with Msunduzi Municipality so that the offices can be used by the the Department of Human Settlements sub-unit as they are in “desperate need” of office accommodation.

“The unit has 30 staff members and is experiencing a shortage of office space to a point where some staff members are currently using the boardroom as their office,” read the report.

It also stated that there had been numerous attempts made to provide them with office space in other buildings.

The office of the Public Protector currently occupies five offices. The release of these offices this will allow the Mkondeni Market block to be kept purely for municipal use and trade activities
