TRISTAN Naidoo, a Grade 7 Deccan Road Primary pupil, has been awarded the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation scholarship which gives him a 100% scholarship to attend Michaelhouse for his five years of high school.

Tristan went through various interviews and assessments after submitting his Grade 6 school report. He competed against 2 000 applicants and attended a three-day course in Cape Town where 60 pupils were chosen to participate in a selection camp.

There were many skills tested, including entrepreneurship and creativity. Pupils were given challenges to show what they could come up with.

After participating in the camp, he and 29 pupils from around the country were awarded the scholarship. He is the only Pietermaritzburg finalist and one of two pupils in KwaZulu-Natal.

Naidoo said he is looking forward to attending Michaelhouse.

“Although it will be a change because I will be a boarder, I know the opportunities I will be given will be worth the change.”

He thanked his parents for believing in him and pushing him to strive for excellence.

“My parents always taught me to strive for excellence and never to accept mediocrity. That is why I always work hard at school and do the best I can, and I can see how hard work has paid off.”

Tristan was due to have his interview at Michaelhouse this week where he will meet the principal and be shown around the school
