WITH urgent maintenance of water infrastructure having begun, Msunduzi residents have been urged to use water sparingly to avoid a complete failure in the system.

Water parastatal Umgeni Water plans to repair the raw water supply pipe from Midmar Dam to DV Harris water works, the main water source for the municipality, during a five-day shutdown.

But while the city says it will attempt to maintain flow to households and businesses, spokesperson Nqobile Madonda said some areas might find themselves waterless in rare circumstances, but water tankers would be on standby.

“Urgent rehabilitation of the raw water pipeline will be conducted by Umgeni Water between Midmar Dam and the municipality in order to reduce the risk of failure of the pipeline in the near future,” said Madonda.

She said the Msunduzi Water Sub Unit together with Umgeni Water will be closely monitoring the situation and will also ensure that all reservoirs are topped up before the shutdown commences, but urged residents to use water sparingly.

The shutdown periods will be until Thursday, 13 to 17 May, 22 to 27 May and 2 to 6 June.
