PIETERMARITZBURG’s restaurant, Trafford’s, won the prestigious American Express Amex Platinum Fine Dining award at an event at Kate’s Palace in Sandton.

Restaurant owner Penny Hatting, who opened the restaurant four years ago, said that winning the award will put Trafford’s and Pietermaritzburg on the map.

“We are thrilled that American Express recognises us. The award puts Trafford’s right up there with the best restaurants in the country. The rest of the country is now taking note of us. We have made it.”

In 2013 the restaurant won the Msunduzi Municipality’s Mayoral Award for an upmarket restaurant.

“The restaurant was named after my father and he loved good food. When I was a young girl, he took me to elegant places to fine-dine. It was a wonderful experience and I found it exciting.”

Hatting said she had always wanted to be part of the food industry and started her journey with a catering company, Food With Finesse, where she catered for many functions and weddings, even catering for Nelson Mandela’s 78th birthday party.

Hatting owned Artist Palate Coffee Shop at the Tatham Art Gallery and Strelitzia Room Restaurant at the KZN National Botanical Gardens and owns the Heritage Guest House.

A year after Trafford’s opened, Hatting knew she had to hire a chef who would take the restaurant to greater heights and so hired Kayla-Ann Osborne (22) as head chef.

“She took the restaurant to another level, and further yet,” said Hatting.

Osborne recently became a runner-up for the Unilever Junior Chef of the Year.

Osborne said that she likes to challenge herself.

“I have grown over the years and I know that I am getting better with time.

“I also like to drive myself forward. It normally takes more than six years for restaurants to be recognised by American Express - for us it took only four years,” said Osborne
