‘Return post card system’ is perfect

2015-09-30 06:00

YOUR article on meter reading in Fever 9 September refers.

Msundusi Municipality introduced a “return post card system” for reading electricity and water meters a few years ago.

The system is perfect, except that it did not require the reader to read his or her meter on the first day of every month.

I have been using this system since it’s inception, with the modification of reading on the first day of each month, and it has worked perfectly ever since - no queries, no errors, ideal.

I know on the first day of each month what I have to pay for my electricity and water, and I do so on the first day.

The reason for reading on the first day of the month is that all municipalities change their rates for electricity and water on 1 July every year.

The new rates therefore, and particularly water, are applicable to a calendar month.

If the meter is not read on the first day, then averaging must take place in order to arrive at the correct usage for that month. This requires a lot of time-consuming, unnecessary office work

A large proportion of people who I have spoken to say that they don’t know how to read the meters.

It is simple - read only the black figures on both the electric and water meters.

To submit wrong readings could be construed as theft, leading to court action and even jail.
