MARITZBURG Fever received an e-mail from a concerned resident about the squatter who is living on the roof of a bus shelter on the corner of CB Downs and Murray roads.

According to Vernon Vogt, the man sleeps on the shelter roof every night when it is not raining and uses the nearby fence as his toilet.

“His favourite pastime is trashing all the rubbish bins for food and then he moves onto the bags put out by the business in and around De Klerk Circle, Murray Road and Gladys Manzi Road. He makes a fire on the pavement and cooks his meals - a very attractive picture,” said Vogt.

Nqobile Madonda, acting marketing and communications manager at Msunduzi Municipality, said it is “an extraordinary situation”.

“Municipal security went to check the area, but the vagrant was not there [at the time]. It was discovered that the roof is littered with garbage, but the individual was not there. Municipal security will pay periodic visits in the area and if seen, he will be removed accordingly. Waste management will be attending to the cleanliness of the area,” said Madonda
