READ your meters yourself - this will prevent municipal workers from having to get onto your property to record your meter readings after hours or when you are at work.

There has been an increase in the number of “after-hour” municipal meter readers on PMB streets in pursuit of getting hold of people at home so they can access the property, which is inaccessible during the day because the resident is at work.

Acting Msunduzi Municipal marketing and communications manager, Nqobile Madonda, said the municipality had to deploy a team of meter readers to focus on residents’ units that are inaccessible during the day. The inaccessibility is the reason there has been an increase in the estimation of their meter readings, this in turn results in their consumption escalating.

Residents are up in arms because the municipality is asking that residents allow meter readers access to their property after working hours, which raises security concerns.

Madonda said the late-night meter readers work until 9pm on week nights.

She said all workers have clear identification on them for residents to check before letting them onto their property. “Meter readers have identity cards and a letter from municipality bearing contact details of municipal officials to verify if there is any doubt or concern.”

Late-night meter reading is a new development put in place by the municipality to decrease the estimation of readings that have, over recent months, resulted in exorbitant bills.

Madonda said that should residents submit their reading to the municipality every month it would help alleviate the problem. Meter readings need to be submitted to municipal offices before the seventh of each month and there are various methods that consumers can use to submit the readings (see sidebar).

“We appeal to our customers to co-operate with the municipality and submit their readings timeously, every month,” said Madonda.

Ways to submit readings:

• Phone reading through to 033 392 22554.

• Submit to the meter reading section on the 1st floor, AS Chetty building.

• Email reading to

• Log onto the Msunduzi website.

DO you submit your meter readings electronically?

If not, would you let meter readers onto your property after hours?

Samantha Hart

There have been too many cases of fake meter readers who come in and then rob you I take the reading to the gate they can read the water that’s on the verge

We read ourselves and tell the meter reader who waits at the gate

Janine Moodley

Take down reading on the 1st and give that reading to the meter reader as emailing it no longer works and they never answer their telephones!
