THE 15-member Swimchix team, which will be participating in the 2016 aQuellé Midmar Mile as part of the 8-Mile Club, are holding a charity swimathon at the Pietermaritzburg Seals’ swimming pool in Pine Street.

This is to raise funds for the Pink Drive and Singakwenza, two of the Midmar Mile’s official charities.

In August, the Pink Drive received a cheque for R209 504 from the 8-Mile Club, while Singakwenza received R208 113 - with Russell Munroe raising R83 046 of that amount.

The Pink Drive provides a service to those in need, it advocates for change in the cancer space, and carries the message “early detection saves lives”.

Singakwenza’s Early Childhood Development Programme focuses on teaching children through play, and utilising recyclable materials to ensure sustainable resources in economically disadvantaged communities of KwaZulu-Natal.

Prospective participants in the charity swimathon are urged to book their places early for the event, which takes place from 3pm to 9pm on Friday, 30 October. The swim is open to all and is being billed as “a fun, family evening”. Swimmers can take part individually, or in teams of two to four people.

Time slots need to be pre-booked and the idea is for participants to swim as many lengths of the pool as possible in 30 minutes. They can be sponsored per length, or once-off donations will be welcomed. Food, drinks and a tuck shop will be available on the night.

It is the third year that the charity swimathon is being held and organisers are expecting it to be bigger and better than before.

The swimathon is also an ideal opportunity to do something for a good cause as part of a team-building event. - Supplied
