MATTHEW Sates (11) has claimed top spot in South Africa in his age group for butterfly and breaststroke.

The Grade 6 pupil from Merchiston Preparatory School has been swimming since he was four and currently swims for Seals Swimming Club under the guidance of Wayne Ridden and Sibani Makhanya.

Matthew also recently participated in the national swimming championship and won nine medals which included gold and silver. He is also the current inter-house champion at Merchiston and has held onto the title since he started at the school. Matthew said that he began to love swimming when he saw his older brother Timothy pursuing his swimming while growing up. His favourite swimmer is Cameron van den Berg he says.

Matthew’s role model is his brother Timothy.

“He’s much cooler than Cameron,” he said.

Dedicated to his swimming, Matthew trains in the morning and night and plans to continue his swimming career
