WOMEN of Purpose (WOP), a local social upliftment organisation, recently held their annual Christmas party for the seniors and underprivileged children and seniors of their community.

“This year our main programme was our Christmas party, which we host for both seniors and children who are less privileged than most,” said WOP founder Judy Maharaj.

She said the organisation hosted various drug awareness campaigns in their ward 34 suburb as well as assisting seniors in need of groceries and hosting a women’s conference every year to uplift broken and abused women.

“Throughout the year we hold various initiatives to empower our community and help in any way possible when needed.”

Maharaj said this year they were able to spoil and treat 150 children and 50 seniors members of the community.

“Each child and senior who attended was blessed with a Christmas present and a treat that they are often times left without during this festive period,” she said.

Ambitious about the future, Maharaj said that their plan for WOP was to open a centre where she and her colleagues could assist women and children against any form of abuse.

“At the moment the battle we are facing is in applying for our NPO status and we are appealing to the public to help us in any way possible going forward.

“We would also like to thank our sponsors for going the extra mile in making sure our Christmas party was a success,” concluded Maharaj.
