A virtuous woman, taken by the Lord

KANAGAMBAL Moodley (nee James), fondly known as “Mama”, was born on 22 February, 1936 to the late Mr and Mrs VC James. She was the 11th of 12 children.

Kanaga formerly lived in Boom Street. She met the love of her life Thungaveloo Moodley and they were blessed with five sons - Komalan, Kovalan, Pastor Preggy (Shri Vishnu Primary principal), Gonnie and the late Jayendren. She was a loving mother-in-law, grandmother of 13 and a great-grandmother of five who dedicated her life to her family.

Mama was truly a virtuous woman with great wisdom and integrity. She lived an exemplary life, inspiring those around her. She was a strong, God-fearing woman and a true visionary.

She was one of the founder members of the Northdale Presbyterian Church, which started some 50 years ago. Mama had many passions in life, but her kitchen and entertaining skills is what she was well known for.

Mama enjoyed dancing and was a tap dancer. She did the ribbon dance for the Queen of England and was a top sportswoman who excelled in athletics. She travelled widely with her siblings and enjoyed many years of touring.

Her humble nature attracted people to her home. Her belief was that people don’t come for a plate of food, but rather for the love, but visiting her, one would never leave her home without sharing a meal or having a cup of tea.

In 2006, at the age of 70, Mama fought and survived the dreaded disease of fourth stage cancer. God had graciously spared her for an extra 10 years where she enjoyed sharing her testimony with everyone she came into contact with.

On 7 January, while on holiday in Johannesburg, Mama had a massive heart attack. She was admitted to the Netcare Union Hospital in Alberton where she was well cared for. Upon recovery, she underwent a successful triple bypass undertaken by Dr Kaveer Sohan formerly from Pietermaritzburg.

Even though she was well in age God still kept her around to be with her family and friends. Through this trying experience mama recovered and gave her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ all praise, glory and honour for her life. She looked forward to returning home to Pietermaritzburg to celebrate her 80th birthday on 22 February, but God, in His favour, looked down upon Mama and saw it fit to add her beautiful soul to His host of angels in the early hours of Friday morning, 5 February. Her calling to higher services with the Lord was very peaceful.

The Moodley family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the staff of Netcare Union Hospital (Alberton), Dr Kaveer Sohan, Dr Scopp and Dr Theron and to family and friends for their love, support and floral tributes.

The life of this dear and blessed lady has left a huge void in many lives. Truly her presence is missed. She has earned this eternal rest with the Lord. RIP Mama - we love you.
