Accused is granted bail

BONGANI Mncwabe, who was charged with the murder of Farhad Manjoo last month during an alleged road incident, was granted bail of R5 000 last Friday.

Appearing for the second time in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court, Mncwabe was granted bail but was given strict bail conditions which he must adhere to until August 15, when his case will resume.

Mncwabe was ordered to appear at the Alexandra Road Police Station once a week, was ordered not to leave Pietermaritzburg without consent from the investigating officer and also had to agree not to interfere with any witnesses in the case.

Phumlani Fakude, Mncwabe’s lawyer, stated that his client was defending himself when Manjoo was shot and killed, and said that Mncwabe acted in self-defence.

Fakude said that his client was forcibly removed from his vehicle and physically wrestled between several cars by Manjoo and his friends.

Video footage of the incident was displayed for the state prosecutor Rene Padayachee and the investigating officer, Nathan Khumalo.

The incident had been recorded by a nearby restaurant’s camera on Pietermaritz Street.

Khumalo said that when a fight started, Manjoo jumped out of his vehicle to separate those involved but was killed in the process. Fakude denied this, stating that based on the video footage, no one tried to break up the fight.
