‘Ace Ngcobo’s bid not taken seriously’ — Govindasamy

2018-06-06 06:02

THE South African Football Association’s (Safa) long-serving executive member and local lawyer Poobie Govindasamy, says that former Premier Soccer League top referee Andile “Ace” Ngcobo’s failed attempt to challenge Dr Danny Jordaan for the top position at Safa was expected and was not taken serious by the organisation.

Govindasamy insists that Jordaan is still the best person to lead Safa for the next five years and says this was not doubted from the onset.

“Absolutely Dr Jordaan is a leader of high quality,” said Govindasamy.

Last Saturday in Johannesburg, Ngcobo shocked everybody at the Safa electoral conference and local soccer circles when he pulled out of the Safa leadership elections at the 11th hour sighting personal reasons.

Ngcobo stormed out of the elective congress looking angry and said it was “all a fraudulent scam”, and “my name cannot bless this thing, I’m done”.

Jordaan was elected again as Safa president for the next five years unopposed.

Later an excited looking Jordaan spoke to the media pointing out his plans for the future.

He said that he feels women’s club football needs attention in order to be taken to the next level. He also mentioned the possibility of hosting another Soccer World Cup.

“There a handful of things that we need to look at as a new executive committee. We need to look at the possibilities and our real chances of hosting the Fifa Women’s World Cup.

“[As well as] putting more emphasis on club football so that we can have more representatives at the Fifa Club World Cup and even hosting the event. We also need to apply our minds to the 2026 World Cup issue.”

Electoral committee chair advocate McCaps Motimele praised Safa for the way the elections were conducted.

“The whole process of the elections was transparent, free and fair,” said Motime- le.

‘We need to look at the possibilities and our real chances of hosting the Fifa Women’s World Cup. [We need] more emphasis on club football so that we can have more representatives at the Fifa Club World Cup and even hosting the event.’
