THREE out of four children who have squinted eyes can have them fixed if they can visit the optometrist early.

This is according to Dr Phikolethu Dlamini who is a optometrist at Spec Savers on 166 Retief Street in Pietermaritzburg in CBD.

Dlamini, who has been a optometrist for five years, says it is very important for people to have their eyes examined at least once in two years.

Speaking to Echo, Dlamini said his granny was blind and after she died without having tried to retrieve her sight, he grew curious and wanted to find out what might have caused her blindness. He was 11 years old at the time, but that was motivation enough for him to study optometry.

“One thing that people do not know is that your eyes change after every two years so that is why it is important to have them examined. Most people are negligent when it comes to their eye sight and some of them are scared that they will have to have them operated.

“It is better to have your eyes examined and get the necessary treatment if needed, before they get damaged more. Your eyesight can diminish easily if you do not take care of it,” he said.

He said for children it important to have their first eye examination at three months at least to see if their eyes are developing well.

“At Spec Savers we exam children between 6 and 12 years old at no charge. If they need glasses we give them a pair for free until they turn 12. However if someone wants to bring in their child that is under 12 years they must make an appointment because we only see two children per day. We are doing free vision screening.”

If you would like to have your eyes tested, Spec Savers Ritief Street are open from Monday to Friday from 8am to 5pm an Saturday from 8.30am to 1pm. For more information you can contact them on 033 342 2511.

They also have another branch in Raisethorpe.

Always look out for their special offers.
