IN the beginning there was Africa - a continent where its people were rich in cultural values, in mineral wealth and lived satisfying lives.

Let’s fast forward to Africa a few hundred years later, where poverty is a huge issue among the African people.

Let us look at how we got here.

In rich Africa, water was free and accessible to all, but in poor Africa access to clean water is for certain individuals.

In rich Africa education was free and less regulated or rather, controlled.

In rich Africa health care, through traditional medicine, was not an issue.

I think by now you see the picture I am trying to paint.

Poverty is a social construct, not to say that poverty is not real, rather it is created by man in an attempt to increase his wealth.

When access to water becomes privatised it is by default that certain individuals, or rather groups, will lose access to water.

The issue of poverty is subjective and disheartening especially in places like Africa and Asia where it is severe and is the cause of many deaths, but the source of poverty lies in wanting to monopolise access to resources and power.

The concentration of power and limitation of wealth in the hands of only a few, is one of the main causes of poverty.

The world’s poorest countries have some of the world’s richest people, this is to say, in some of the poorest countries there is a large wealth gap.

In the current context people need to earn their living so that automatically discredits aid as an answer to eradicate poverty.

Maybe the answer lies in government spending and wealth distribution, a notion of the left-wing (communists) side of politics or maybe in the equality of opportunity as the centre right (liberals) side may have it.
