All set for popular Ward 34 annual sports day

IT’S all systems go for the popular Ward 34 Annual Community Sports Day, which is scheduled for March 17 and 18 at Panorama Primary School at 8 am.

Although areas under Ward 34 are Eastwood, Cinderella Park, Panorama, Madiba, Malivana and Jesmonden (Emikhukhwini), teams from other wards and townships are also allowed to participate.

“Althought the event started as a Ward 34 sports day many years ago, we also welcome teams or children from other areas. We have had teams from Table Mountain, Edendale, Elandskop, Imbali and Copesville,” said organiser and founder Jerry Barnes.

The eventful day will be divided into four sections in order to accommodate everybody and different participants from all walks of life.

It will accommodate senior men’s teams (open), U15 boys’ sides, netball (girls’ open), golden oldies (over 35 men) and a community fun run or walk mile.

Besides the sporting events, there will also be several government departments present to encourage community members to test for different diseases.

The SPCA will also be on site to encourage pet owners to get their dogs vaccinated against rabies.

To put the event together involves a huge amount of effort from Barnes and his local organising committee because there are no funds and they rely on donations and sponsors.

“I think I am very blessed because sponsors such as the Department of Sports and Recreation, Kara Nichhas, the Department of Transport, Panorama Primary School, Poobie Naidoo’s Sports and Echo have come on board and made everything possible.”

For more information, teams and potential partners or sponsors can contact Jerry Barnes at 083 521 9553 or 8 Redwood Crescent, Panorama Gardens.
