THE case against the man who has been allegedly pretending to be a traffic police officer was postponed to January 23 for verification of his address.

Sbonelo Danca (30), from Signal Hill appeared briefly in Pietermaritzburg Regional Court on Monday.

Danca faces charges of fraud after he allegedly took R3000 from Sakhumuzi Dlamini, a motorist, on November 2017.

The court charge sheet indicates that Danca told Dlamini he was working with the road traffic inspectorate and the Msunduzi Municipality and would help reduce his (Dlamini’s) traffic fines.

Dlamini then paid Danca for this ‘service’.

State Prosecutor Nene said she was
opposing bail as Danca did not have a fixed address.

“At the address the investigating officer went to verify, the owner of the house said she is not certain she will allow the accused to continue to live with her if he is released on bail. However, the accused has provided the state with another address that needs to be verified,” she said.

Danca, dressed in a navy T-shirt and denim jeans, spent the day consulting with his lawyer Mthokozisi Dlamini.

Danca was arrested on January 6 by Msunduzi Municipality’s acting traffic inspector Bheki Zondi after he made an illegal turn in the CBD. Zondi previously told Maritzburg Fever he had been looking for Danca for a week before his arrest.

He said this came after he received information from motorists and taxi drivers that there was a man who claimed he was a traffic officer and promised to reduce or write off their traffic fines if they pay him.
