THE magnificent rolling landscape of the Valley of a 1000 Hills is a trail enthusiast’s paradise, and the sunny banks of Nagle Dam are the perfect setting from which to base the very popular 1000 Hills Challenge trail run.

Taking place on Sunday, July 28, this event, which has gained a national following, goes into its eighth year in 2019, having attracted increasing numbers of trail runners and walkers with each subsequent staging of the event.

The 1000 Hills Challenge is one of KZN Trail Runnings “Big Six” events – these are premier events that make the bucket list of many a trail runner due to their exceptional offerings.

The event offers a number of different distances to choose from; the flagship event being the 38km ultra which provides a serious challenge to even the most seasoned trail runners. It circumnavigates the entire Nagle Dam as well as exploring some of the surrounding valleys and hills.

Also on offer is a testing 20km which will reward in equal measure with stunning scenery and sense of accomplishment. For those who looking for a more moderate offering the 10km will still ask questions but is a less strenuous outing. And, as a means of making the event more family friendly, a 5km was added in the last couple of years and has proved greatly popular, a fantastic way for the whole family to get out onto the trail and into the beauty of nature!

In keeping with the theme of family-focused fun, the KZN Trail Running race village, ideally situated alongside the water’s edge, will be fully loaded with delicious food, catering for most needs and wants, refreshing drinks and fantastic coffee. As well as this, the KZNTR KidZone (for children two years and older) will be in action for the morning so that parents can get out on to the trails knowing that their little ones will be entertained and in safe hands.

It’s a stunning time of the year to be in the magnificent KZN outdoors, and with several on site accommodation options available, ranging from “glamping” to self-camping, it’s the perfect opportunity to make a weekend of it!
