SPARKED by her love for anime (Japanese cartoons), Leriece Sewmungal of Northdale, wanting to one up her brother’s drawings, soon realised that she had a talent for art and since then has not looked back.

“I would later go on to find out that my brother had traced the drawing, but I didn’t mind because it was because of him that I attempted my first drawing, wanting to impress him,” said Sewmungal.

Since then Sewmungal has gone on to paint various works inspired by artists such as C215, who she remarked was an ex-convict much to her surprise, and other household names like Vincent Van Gough and Picasso.

Sewmungal realised at an early age that she had more of a passion for the arts than academics and thanks to her supportive parents, was able to study graphic design and fine art.

“I’m thankful that my parents are so supportive of me and my passion and thanks to them I was able to hone in on my skills to become better at my passion,” said Sewmungal, who added that throughout her college experience she focused a lot on self-reflection through her art.

Currently Sewmungal sells various art work of her own to people in and around KwaZulu-Natal, but would love to break out onto the scene more and move overseas to get her art exposed.

“It is such a pleasure and brings me so much of joy to see people with the end product after they’ve received my art,” said Sewmungal.

She said that sometimes she feels as though she is not good enough but hopes to enter her art work into the Hilton Art Festival this year.

Currently working at the Creative Laser Studio as a graphic designer, Sewmungal is hopeful that this year she will have more time on her hands to master her art and focus on growing as an artist.
