“MY ABILITY is more powerful than my disability.” This is the slogan for the disability awareness day that is set to take place in the Imbali Unit 13 hall, in ward 17, on November 22 from 10 am.

The event is organised by ward 17 committee members and is aimed at teaching people about disabilities and encouraging those who are living with disabilities.

David Ndlovu, who is a ward committee member, said: “We want to motivate disabled people, show them love, and let them know and feel that they are part of us and they are the same as us.

“We need to teach our able-bodied people to understand disabled people.

“We want people to stop looking at them and feeling sorry.

“The physically challenged want to be treated as normal people, this is what we figured out when we engaged with them previously.

Ndlovu added that they also want the physically challenged to have a forum in the ward that will fight for their rights because they do have rights.

“As communities we need to accommodate them.

“It is up to us make them feel loved and [feel able to] live comfortably with us.

“This awareness day will also help us a lot in getting to know them better because we want to help those who have talents to showcase them.

“If there are some of them who can knit or sew or anything, we are more than willing to help them.

“We want them to get enough opportunities, same as everyone else. Just because they are living with a disability, it does not mean they need to be excluded,” Ndlovu said.

He further added that they have invited different departments that will assist those who are experiencing difficulties in getting schools for their children or even government grants and other information that might come in handy.

Everyone is invited to attend.

Entrance is free and there will be entertainment as well.
