“DEPRESSION is real and people need to pay attention to it.”

These are the words of Ayanda Mavundla from Caluza who was diagnosed with depression in 2017 and later wrote a book titled Rescued by Depression.

The book was officially launched in July last year. Speaking to Echo, Mavundla said she wrote the book to share her experience and to help others as well. She said being diagnosed was a blessing in disguise for her because she got a chance to fully be herself after the experience.

“Depression really affected my decision making and self esteem. Before I was diagnosed, I knew nothing about depression and I never thought I could be diagnosed with such. At that time I was not feeling well because of dizziness and I was admitted to hospital.

“This book is aimed at teaching people about depression and giving them an idea on what happens when someone is depressed. However, I feel reading a book on depression is not enough, that is why I have established a non-profit organisation, A Pome Mental Illness Advocacy, that teaches about mental illness, depression and anxiety. “I have come a long way and that is why I feel it is important for me to celebrate this book with the whole community and everyone who supported me,” she said.
